Sailors and guests watched as Cmdr. Daniel Arensmeyer turned over command of USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730)(Gold Crew) to Cmdr. James Bilotta March 15th during a change of command ceremony held at the Keyport Undersea Museum in Keyport, Wash.

Arensmeyer took command of Henry M. Jackson in 2007 following the boat’s successful engineering refueling overhaul.

“We had very little operating experience and had a long way to go with regard to becoming a fully certified strategic asset,” said Arensmeyer.  “Leading the crew from those humble beginnings, to a fully certified and highly proficient national strategic asset has been the accomplishment that I am most proud of.”

Numerous crew certifications, two operational reactor safeguard examinations, sea trials, a demonstration and shakedown operation, and four strategic deterrent patrols are among the accomplishments the crew of Henry M. Jackson successfully completed under Arensmeyer’s tenure.

When asked what he would miss the most about commanding his crew Arensmeyer responded, “As the commanding officer, I had the distinct pleasure of being involved in the personal and professional development of every sailor and officer onboard.  Training, mentoring, and leading these fine young men was exceptionally rewarding and will be the thing that I miss the most.”

Bilotta praised Arensmeyer for his leadership, and looks forward to the challenges ahead of him.

“CDR Arensmeyer’s leadership and guidance enabled the boat to come out of the shipyard and rapidly become a proficient asset contributing to the country’s strategic deterrence while keeping the crew’s performance and motivation on a steady incline,” said Bilotta.  “My goals for the boat are to safely complete all assigned tasking on time, and I am looking forward to the challenge of preparing the crew for our upcoming patrol.”

Arensmeyer will report to Combined Task Force 69 as Deputy Commander for Submarine Special Operations in Naples, Italy.
