USS Hawaii departs Groton, enroute to its new homeport of Pearl Harbor

Groton, Connecticut – USS Hawaii (SSN 776) departs Groton, Conn. enroute to its new homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on May 13. Hawaii becomes the first Virginia class submarine to be homeported in Pearl Harbor. Hawaii is a state-of-the-art submarine capable of supporting a multitude of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike, naval special warfare involving special operations forces, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, irregular warfare and mine warfare. Commissioned on May 5, 2007, Hawaii was the third Virginia class attack submarine constructed and the first to be named after the Aloha state. (U.S. photo by Lt. Patrick Evans/Released)
