A native of Paris, Tennessee, Master Chief Caldwell enlisted in the Navy in 1984 and attended Recruit Training in Great Lakes, Illinois. Following Submarine School, he reported to USS Sand Lance (SSN 60) home ported in Charleston, South Carolina.  The ship completed major deployments to the North Atlantic and to the Mediterranean Sea.

Master Chief Caldwell’s follow-on sea duty assignments included a second tour on the USS Sand Lance (SSN 660) and USS Pasadena (SSN 752) as Auxiliary Division Leading Petty Officer.  During these assignments he completed Mediterranean Sea deployments, an Ice Exercise (ICEX) as well as a deployment to Fifth Fleet during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In June 2006 he reported to USS Columbus (SSN 762) as Chief of the Boat (COB) where he completed a Western Pacific Deployment in 2008.  During his tour as COB, Columbus received the Submarine Squadron 7 Battle Efficiency “E” Award for 2008 and The Admiral Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for 2008.  Ashore, Master Chief Caldwell has served as Submarine Auxiliary systems Engineer at the Virginia Class Program Office (PMS-450) in Washington D.C. where he was the “Lead Pilot” for the design of the Virginia Class Submarine fly-by-wire Ship control system.  He also served on the Staff of Submarine Squadron 17 in Bangor, Washington.  In December 2008, Master Chief Caldwell reported to Commander, Submarine Squadron 3 as Command Master Chief.

Master Chief Caldwell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College and is a graduate of the Chief of the Boat and Command Master Chief Capstone course.  He is entitled to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (five awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
