Outside Lookin' In

This highly stylized short presents the opinions of urban Latino youth about the World Trade Center tragedy. Filmmaker Karen Torres interviews teenagers on the streets of Washington Heights in New York City, not long after the event. They reflect on their personal experiences that day, in addition to more pervasive questions and topics as to why it happened, patriotism and the government's response to the attack.
Part of the TWN Call to Media Action. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Third World Newsreel made a call to media workshop students and other filmmakers to help document people's reactions and concerns as well as the governmental and media activity that had ensued. The result was a collection of short videos that presented a wide range of issues of concern to communities of color and that asked questions largely overlooked in mainstream media at large.

TWN acknowledges that in New York we are on the unceded territory of the Lenni Lenape, Canarsie, Shinecock, and Munsee peoples and challenges the harm that continues to be inflicted upon Indigenous and People of Color communities here and abroad, which is why we all need to be part of the struggle for rights, equality and justice.
