Yari Yari Pamberi: Black Women Writers Dissecting Globalization

Globalization, now a buzzword in the West, has been a phenomenon that has shaped the culture and politics of Africa and its diaspora for centuries. YARI YARI PAMBERI brings together women from across the U.S., Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and South America. Renowned and emerging novelists, poets, playwrights, performers, filmmakers, scholars, critics, publishers, translators, visual artists, organizers, and archivists define the real meaning of globalization and its possibilities for development.

This documentary explores globalization on several levels, including the impact of dislocation and population movements on the creative process; creative freedom and censorship since September 11, 2001; and the impact of new technologies on literature, publishing, and distribution.

This film documents selected scenes from panels, readings, and performances during the 2004 Yari Yari Pamberi Conference and features renowned writers Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Maryse Conde, Nawal El Saadawi, Aminata Traore, Ama Ata Aidoo, Edwidge Danticat, Gloria Naylor, Sohna Benga, Latasha N Nevada Diggs, and others.

"Leading scholars, writers, musicians, and filmmakers of African descent from Australia (Aboriginal origins), Benin, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Kenya, Lebanon, Mali, Martinique, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Swaziland, Trinidad, Uganda, United States, and more come together to discuss the cause, effect, and solution of issues enveloping globalized apartheid, body image, colonization, financial distribution and responsibility, gender, politics, and race… Selected speakers and performers provide numerous uplifting and inspiring messages to future activists... The content is valuable, and can be used to supplement African, African-American studies, global studies, literature, and women’s studies. RECOMMENDED."
