SAN DIEGO (Aug. 23, 2011) - USS Asheville (SSN 758) departed for a scheduled deployment to the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of responsibility (AOR) Aug. 23. While in the SOUTHCOM AOR, which includes the Caribbean, Central and South America, Asheville will participate in theatre security cooperation events and operations that support the Maritime Strategy, which includes maritime security, forward presence, sea control, and power projection. USS Asheville (SSN 758) departed for a scheduled deployment to the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of responsibility (AOR) Aug. 23.

While in the SOUTHCOM AOR, which includes the Caribbean, Central and South America, Asheville will participate in theatre security cooperation events and operations that support the Maritime Strategy, which includes maritime security, forward presence, sea control, and power projection.

Commanded by Commander Jerry Miranda, Asheville is one of six Los Angeles-class, fast-attack submarines assigned to Submarine Squadron 11 in San Diego. Named after Asheville, N.C., the boat was commissioned September 28, 1991 and is home to nearly 145 Sailors.
