COMMANDER, SUBMARINE DEVELOPMENT SQUADRON FIVE

SUBDEVRON FIVE is based in Bangor, Washington, and is a world leader in undersea operations through development of tomorrow's technology and tactics, providing United States Submariners with the best off-hull sensor capabilities, while conducting challenging global deployments in support of national interests. Originally established on 12 August 1967 as Submarine Development Group One, SUBDEVRON FIVE conducts cooperative programs with civilian scientific and academic institutions in pursuit of national science objectives, and is responsible within the Submarine Force for tactical development in the areas of off-hull sensors to include: Ocean engineering research and development; remotely operated and unmanned undersea vehicles; and Naval special warfare. This includes research and development efforts and the testing of new tactics and systems for dissemination and incorporation within the Submarine Force.
SUBDEVRON FIVE is the immediate superior in command of three SEAWOLF-Class attack submarines, USS SEAWOLF (SSN 21), USS CONNECTICUT (SSN 22), and USS JIMMY CARTER (SSN 23). The submarines are exceptionally quiet, fast, well armed, and equipped with advanced sensors. Though lacking Vertical Launch Systems, the submarines have eight torpedo tubes that can fire Tomahawks and the ship's Torpedo Room can hold up to 50 weapons. The third ship of the Class, USS JIMMY CARTER (SSN 23), has a 100-foot hull extension called the multi-mission platform. This hull section provides for additional payload to accommodate advanced technology used to carry out research and development objectives and offers enhanced war-fighting capabilities.
