CDR Martin Muckian
COMMANDING OFFICER
USS GREENEVILLE (SSN 772)
A native of Elmhurst, Illinois, Commander Muckian graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned in 1995 through the NROTC program.
In May 1996, after completing initial nuclear propulsion and submarine training, he reported to the USS GREENEVILLE (SSN 772) in Norfolk, Virginia. He served as Damage Control Assistant, Main Propulsion Assistant, and Communications Officer. During his tour the ship changed homeports to Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i and conducted its first deployment to the Western Pacific.
From January 2000 to March 2002, Commander Muckian served as Flag Lieutenant to Commander, Submarine Group EIGHT in Naples, Italy. Following this tour he attended the Submarine Officers Advanced Course where he earned the L. Y. Spear Award as honor man of his class.
In August 2002, Commander Muckian was assigned as Engineer Officer aboard USS LOUISVILLE (SSN 724) in Pearl Harbor. While he was aboard the ship completed two Western Pacific deployments, conducted strike operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and earned the Battle Efficiency "E" award for 2003.
Following this tour, he reported as a student to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He graduated with highest distinction and earned a Masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
In March 2007, Commander Muckian joined the USS ALEXANDRIA (SSN 757) in Groton, Connecticut, as Executive Officer. During his tour the ship completed a deployment to the Middle East and earned the Battle Efficiency "E" award for 2008.
From April 2009 to March 2011, he served as Nuclear Officer Program Manager and Submarine Officer Community Manager on the staff of the Chief of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC.
