CDR Andrew C. Hertel
COMMANDING OFFICER
USS TEXAS (SSN 775)
Commander Hertel, a native of Clarendon Hills, IL, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1994 with a Bachelors of Science in Cell and Structural Biology. He was commissioned in May 1994 via NROTC.
Following nuclear power and submarine training, CDR Hertel reported aboard USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734) BLUE and served as Electrical Assistant, Chemistry & Radiological Controls Assistant, and Assistant Weapons Officer. During this tour, he completed five strategic deterrent patrols.
In March 1999, CDR Hertel reported to Nuclear Power Training Unit, Charleston, SC, serving as a Shift Engineer and Staff Training Officer. During this tour, he earned a Masters of Business Administration from Troy State University.
Following completion of the Submarine Officer Advanced Course, he was assigned to USS GREENEVILLE (SSN 772) in Pearl Harbor from April 2002 to December 2004, serving as Navigator and Operations Officer. During this tour, GREENEVILLE completed a deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean.
In January 2005, CDR Hertel reported to Joint Intelligence Operations Center, Pacific, in Pearl Harbor. As head of the Submarine Analysis Group, he provided intelligence support to deployed forces in the Pacific AOR.
Following prospective executive officer training, he reported for duty as Executive Officer of USS NORTH CAROLINA (SSN 777). The plank owner XO, he supervised completion of new construction, initial sea trials, commissioning, and the first year of operations of the ship. He detached in December 2008.
CDR Hertel reported to the staff of Commander Submarine Force Atlantic in January 2009, and served as Personnel Programs and Career Development Officer until February 2011. After completing training for Command, he reported to USS TEXAS in December 2011.
CDR Hertel has had the privilege of serving on teams to be awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Battle 'E' Award.
