The Multiplicity of Us

On June 2015, 24 women of immigrant and first generation backgrounds of all ages came together for an intense one day video production workshop. Together, they produced a series of three short videos: COMING AND LIVING IN AMERICA, BORDERS INSIDE AND OUT and LUNA'S STORY: THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCEPTING YOURSELF.

Presented by New York Women in Film and Television and taught by Third World Newsreel, this media project was made possible through support from City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley and the Cultural Immigrant Initiative of New York City.

Reviews
"THE MULTIPLICITY OF US... details the cultural and emotional challenges the women faced in becoming part of contemporary U.S. society. The women interviewed on camera are intelligent, frank, often funny, and more than eager to share their experiences. Whether they are dealing with family members who are not pleased with how Americanized they've become or are trying to navigate the intricacies and eccentricities of the American way of life, the women offer real insights into the challenges faced by today's immigrant populations. Recommended." - P. Hall, Video Librarian Magazine
THE MULTIPLICITY OF US documents the journeys of women seeing and being seen through media... Immigrant and first-generation American women from varying backgrounds share their thoughts on living in the United States with multicultural backgrounds, growing up in border spaces, and navigating cultural exchanges. Viewers are reminded that these women, as crewmembers, are testing their own borders, opening their own metaphorical gates and enabling expressions in a historically marginalized environment. - Mary Erickson, Films for the Feminist Classroom

TWN acknowledges that in New York we are on the unceded territory of the Lenni Lenape, Canarsie, Shinecock, and Munsee peoples and challenges the harm that continues to be inflicted upon Indigenous and People of Color communities here and abroad, which is why we all need to be part of the struggle for rights, equality and justice.
